Marching through the streets of Zion, Illinois, in July 1904, this parade displayed the workforce and products of the industrial town that John Alexander Dowie had founded only a few years earlier, in 1901, as a religious community north of Chicago. Dowie organized Zion around a strict faith and a shared economy, and civic events like this one showed outsiders that the city's factories and trades were working. Parades of this kind were a popular way for American towns of the period to advertise their industry and civic pride, so the procession offers a view of how a utopian community presented itself to the public.
