Titled *Fate of the Rebel Flag*, this 1861 color lithograph takes up the question many Northern readers were asking that year: what would become of the banner of the seceding states. William Bauly painted the original design, and Sarony, Major & Knapp of Broadway printed it, while William Schaus, a New York publisher of political prints, issued it under copyright. Pictures like this circulated widely in the first months of the Civil War, when debate over secession and the national flag was intense. The copy described here is the copyright deposit impression that went to the Library of Congress.
