A battle flag held aloft by a rider at full gallop gives this scene its motion and its danger. Color bearers on both sides were prime targets, because a flag marked where a unit stood and where it was headed, and losing one could break a charge. Confederate cavalry, including the troopers who fought on the flanks near Gettysburg in early July 1863, carried these banners into action, and the red field and blue saltire of the Southern battle flag became one of the most recognized emblems of the war. Notice how the flag, rather than the rider, anchors the composition.
