Cavalry charging behind a battle flag is a familiar image of the Civil War, and this illustration presents it as a Confederate attack. Mounted troops were central to the Gettysburg campaign in the summer of 1863, when J.E.B. Stuart's horsemen were meant to screen and scout for Robert E. Lee's army. Their most dramatic clash came on July 3 at East Cavalry Field, where Confederate cavalry attacked Union horsemen in an effort to strike the Union rear as Pickett's infantry advanced. The picture captures the energy and danger of those charges, though its artistic style reflects the era of its making more than the precise moment of battle.
