Two standard bearers stand amid the aftermath of a battle in this color lithograph, which is titled for the day after the fighting. E.B. Bensell drew the design and T. Sinclair printed it in Philadelphia around 1864, and it served as a sheet music cover, so its job was to sell a patriotic song as much as to record an event. The gallery groups it with Gettysburg material, which suits the July 1863 battle, though the picture was made a year later and reads as a sentimental scene. Color bearers were among the most exposed men in a regiment, and the image honors their courage and the losses of the Union ranks.
