This title page introduces Alexander Gardner's *Photographic Sketch Book of the War*, and the record credits the lithograph to Alfred R. Waud, a Harper's Weekly artist whose name is misspelled as "Ward." It was issued in Washington by Philp & Solomons around 1865 and 1866, when Gardner's two volumes gathered wartime photographs of battlefields, camps and soldiers. The page shows how publishers packaged the war's imagery for buyers who wanted a keepsake of the conflict, and its drawn decoration contrasts with the photographs it introduces.
