Among the battlefield views on this board, this one comes from Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the War, a two-volume set Alexander Gardner issued in Washington in 1866. The book gathered photographs his studio made during the Civil War, and its Gettysburg images were taken in the summer of 1863, soon after the battle, while the town and fields still showed the marks of fighting. Made on location with large glass-plate cameras, the views record the terrain, fences, and debris as they stood in the weeks after the fighting. Gardner's team, which included Timothy O'Sullivan, worked close to the front, so these pages remain among the earliest photographic records of a Civil War battlefield.
