Painted by a Confederate soldier, this scene shows a camp of the Southern army as its author knew it from the inside. The record credits C. W. Chapman, an ordnance sergeant with the 59th Virginia Regiment in Wise's Brigade, as the source painting. London publisher Louis Zimmer issued this color lithograph around 1871, a few years after the war ended, when Northern and British audiences were eager for images of soldiering on both sides. Its value lies in its eyewitness origin, since it reflects a participant's view of everyday camp life rather than a later reconstruction.
