Marbled paper is made by floating pigments on a thickened liquid and lifting the patterns onto sheets, a technique with roots in Turkish ebru work that spread into European bookbinding. The Library of Congress label on this cover shows the item came from the library's holdings, though the record does not name the book, its author, or its date. Its place on a Gettysburg board suggests a connection to the battlefield or its literature, but the cover itself gives few clues about its contents. Marbled covers were valued for their durability and decorative appeal, which is why many nineteenth-century volumes still carry them.
