Rather than a view of the battlefield itself, this is the cover of the book that carried many of those views to the public: Alexander Gardner's *Photographic Sketch Book of the War*, issued in Washington in 1866 as two volumes of mounted photographs. Gardner's crews worked across the Gettysburg field in the summer of 1863, and several of the book's plates show the dead, the ground and the town as they looked just after the fighting. The book presented these images as a historical record rather than as art, a claim that shaped how many Americans first came to see Gettysburg.
