Brady's Daguerrean Gallery is a view of the New York studio itself, the place where Mathew Brady built his reputation for portraits of statesmen, writers, and other public figures. Made around 1854, this half-plate daguerreotype is gold toned, a common step that strengthened the image and gave its silver surface a warmer, deeper tone. The numbers scratched into the plate and the later transfer marks on its back show that it passed through several hands, including the U.S. War College, before reaching the Library of Congress. Because it records the studio where so many well-known daguerreotypes were made, it offers a rare look at the setting behind the portraits.
