Rather than a living sitter, this stereoscopic daguerreotype records a plaster bust of Dr. William Robertson Grant, as noted on the back. Grant, who lived from 1811 to 1852, is the subject of the sculpture, and the image dates from sometime between 1850 and 1860, near the end of his life or just after. Photographing sculpture was a common practice of the period, since it let a likeness be copied and shared. The paired views were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave the small plaster head a sense of depth.
