Written on the back of this sixth-plate daguerreotype, the name C. H. Hicks identifies a sitter shown in profile at a desk, noted as a clerk of the House of Representatives. The plate survives among the American Colonization Society records, the group founded in 1817 to resettle Black Americans in Liberia. Its maker is unidentified, but the image was later shown in an exhibition of portraits by Augustus Washington, a Black daguerreotypist working in the 1850s.
