The title names the vessel, the steamship Ben Campbell, shown at a landing. This quarter-plate daguerreotype, a small image on silvered copper, was made sometime between 1852 and 1860 by a photographer who has not been identified. Steamboats carried most of the passengers and freight on American rivers in those years, and this plate records a working vessel at the moment of docking. The case, a variant of a style cataloged by Rinhart, shows how these small images were packaged for sale.
