Here the men of the Arundel Engine Company of Kennebunkport, Maine, posed for a daguerreotype in 1850, and a caption printed beneath the image names them from left to right, including a captain, a painter, and several others. The town bought a hand-operated tub and hose that same year. Volunteer companies like this one relied on muscle to pump water onto fires, since most small towns then had no piped water supply, and the men shown were likely neighbors and local tradesmen. The plate has been cut down from its original half-plate size, so some of the group's edges were trimmed away.
