Identified by trade rather than by name, this sixth-plate daguerreotype presents a latch maker in an occupational portrait made sometime between 1850 and 1860. The small, affordable format made portraits accessible to working people, and the hand coloring adds tints to faces and dress that the bare silver plate could not show.
