The title suggests a portrait meant to show the sitter in a working role, with the trade or setting carrying as much meaning as the face. Made in 1840, it dates from the first year that daguerreotypes were widely practiced after Louis Daguerre's process was publicly announced in 1839. Exposures then could run for minutes, so sitters had to hold still in strong light, and the plate's mirror-like surface gave every detail a sharp, reversed clarity. Occupational portraits of this early period are valued today as some of the earliest attempts to record ordinary working life in photographic form.
