The title of this daguerreotype is cut short after the words "Occupational portrait," so the sitter's trade is not recorded here, but the form is clear. Around 1850, working people and professionals often sat for portraits showing them with the tools or clothing of their work. Each daguerreotype is a unique image on a polished silvered copper plate, usually sealed under glass in a small case, and its mirror-like surface reflects the viewer when tilted toward the light.
