The catalog entry breaks off after "Occupational portrait o," so the sitter's trade and name are not recorded here. It dates to 1850, when the daguerreotype was the most widely used photographic process, and portraying a person at work was a deliberate choice, since the picture could show a trade through tools, dress, or a workplace setting. Each daguerreotype is a unique positive on a silvered copper plate, so this object survives as a single piece, and its mirror-like surface reflects the viewer's face when tilted toward the light.
