Its title poses the question outright, and the chart beneath it shows how higher speeds lengthen the distance a car travels between a driver's first sight of a hazard and a full stop. The Iowa State Safety Council sponsored the poster, and the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, produced it in silkscreen, a method well suited to inexpensive runs of public-safety posters. Traffic deaths were rising across the country in the 1930s, and posters like this one aimed to give drivers a clear, memorable warning. A date stamp on the back, September 1940, suggests it stayed in circulation several years after its 1936 date.
