The title on this 1936 silkscreen poster advertises *Hell-bent fer heaven!*, the 1924 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama by Hatcher Hughes, staged under the Federal theater Project. Hughes's play follows a mountain family caught in a long feud and a harsh religious zeal, a rural tragedy that gave the project a sturdy American work to offer audiences. The production was one of many the Works Progress Administration's theater arm mounted in California during the Depression, when federal support kept live drama running for working audiences. The poster's bold color and flat shapes reflect the silkscreen method that WPA poster units used to publicize such shows.
