Harry Kellar, the American stage magician, is the figure at the center of this 1894 color lithograph, which the Strobridge Lithographing Company printed in Cincinnati and New York. Kellar was one of the most celebrated conjurers of his day, and posters like this one helped sell tickets to his touring illusions. The subjects listed for the print point to his best-known effects: levitation and the appearance of demons, both staples of late nineteenth-century stage magic. Strobridge was a leading maker of theatrical posters of the era, so the bold color and dramatic staging here reflect the commercial art of the touring show.
