Several chairs share this sheet of graphite sketches, with a design study for a lounge chair at the center, a record of how the Eameses worked through many forms on paper before committing to one. Dated to about 1948, the drawing comes from the years when Charles and Ray Eames were experimenting with molded plywood, the material that would define much of their furniture. A note written along the side reads "Call about stencils," a small, practical trace of the work of getting designs made and marked for production. The quick, loose linework shows the designers testing proportions and silhouettes before any form was fixed.
