Several views of one chair share this sheet of semitransparent tracing paper, drawn in graphite at about 14 by 32 centimeters. Handwritten notes, "Cleaner tailor" and "B7 A7," appear on the drawing itself, suggesting the shorthand a designer might jot down while refining a form. The subject headings tie the sheet to Eames chairs of the 1940s, and it was later shown in an exhibition on the Eames Lounge Chair, which Herman Miller introduced in 1956, several years after these studies were likely made. The sketches suggest how a design moved from studio exploration toward the molded, upholstered form that became a modern classic.
