Greensburg, the seat of Decatur County in southeastern Indiana, was a farming and trading town in 1906, with its economy built on grain, livestock, and the shops that served surrounding families. The Odd Fellows Home was one of the institutions that gave the town a regional reputation for charity. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternal benevolent society with lodges across Indiana, ran such homes to shelter aging members, widows, and orphaned children without other support. Before public pensions and widespread social insurance, fraternal homes like this one were a central way Hoosier communities cared for their dependents. Local residents would have known the building as a source of lodge pride and a familiar landmark.
