Yorktown, Virginia, was the site of a siege in the spring of 1862, when Union forces under George B. McClellan advanced up the Virginia Peninsula and pressed the Confederate defenses there until the Confederates withdrew in early May. This picture survives as a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical images that, viewed through a stereoscope, appear to have depth. It was made from wet collodion glass negatives, the standard process of the period, and it was taken by photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866. Its two halves are catalogued separately, and the number 363 scratched into the negative emulsion helps identify it within the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection.
