Crowds gathered outside a Black family's house in Miami in 1957, and the signs they carried were the photograph's most striking feature, turning a private home into a public stage for opposition. Pickets like this were a common response when Black families moved into predominantly white neighborhoods, a period when housing segregation was enforced through restrictive covenants, real estate practices, and informal pressure. Although the Supreme Court had ruled in 1948 that courts could not enforce such covenants, many white residents still used protests and intimidation to keep neighborhoods segregated. The photograph records how ordinary street protest was used to defend that color line.
