This 1919 color lithograph is a recruiting poster for the Scharfschützenkorps Prey, a sharpshooter unit whose name appears at the top of the design. Its text, roughly "Only carefully selected men of all arms, report to us," signals that the corps wanted skilled marksmen rather than ordinary conscripts. In 1919 Germany was demobilizing after the armistice, and many veterans and young men were drawn into volunteer Freikorps units, which recruited through posters like this one amid political unrest and uncertainty over the country's borders. The poster is a useful record of how these paramilitary groups sought men in the immediate postwar period.
