Few recruiting posters from postwar Berlin speak as directly to the city itself as this one, which calls on volunteers of every branch of service to secure Berlin and join the Brigade Reinhard. The brigade was one of the Freikorps units raised in 1919, when the German government relied on such volunteer forces to restore order after the revolutionary unrest that followed the armistice. Printed as a color lithograph and signed by the artist, Helmuth Stockmann, the poster is notable for its shield motif and its framing of military service as civic defense.
