An ox pulling a plow, rather than a team of horses or mules, is the detail that sets this scene apart. Dated 1921, it shows a form of farm labor that was already giving way to tractors and motorized equipment, though oxen remained in use on many small farms. The image survives as a glass negative from the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio whose work came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes on the glass, which the record attributes to natural deterioration of the original coatings.
