A team of oxen hauling a plow across a field makes this one stand out from the many horse and mule scenes in the National Photo Company collection. Animal power still did much of the farm work in the early 1920s, though gasoline tractors were spreading across American farms. The company, based in Washington, D.C., was a commercial studio that photographed people, places, and everyday work for sale and reproduction from about 1900 into the 1930s. The record gives March 23, 1921, as the date, but it is unverified, and the glass plate shows the streaks and blemishes that come with age in the original coating.
