The Thousand Islands, a scatter of rocky islands where the St. Lawrence River leaves Lake Ontario, were in 1912 one of the best-known summer resort regions in the northeastern United States. Steamboats carried vacationers among the islands and between the river towns, and hotels and boarding houses in Alexandria Bay and nearby villages depended on the summer season. Wealthy families from New York and other cities had built large island estates, including Boldt Castle on Heart Island, begun by hotel man George Boldt around 1900 and left unfinished after 1904, and Singer Castle on Dark Island, built for sewing machine magnate Frederick Bourne. Locals knew the region for its fishing, its river traffic, and its busy July and August crowds, which shaped life along the shore far more than farming or manufacturing did.
