In 1912 the Thousand Islands were still reached mainly by water, and motorcars were a novelty on the docks at Cape Vincent and Alexandria Bay. Roads across the islands were few, so summer visitors and residents alike depended on steamers and launches to reach hotels and cottages. Cape Vincent, at the lake's outlet, kept a ferry to Wolfe Island on the Ontario side, a crossing that had long carried farm wagons, mail, and travelers over the narrow channel. Along the American shore the summer hotel trade remained busy, while many island families still lived by the seasonal work of the river. The decade was a time of change, as the automobile slowly began to reach the country roads that led toward the water.
