This portrait shows Al Demaree in a 1912 uniform, which the research notes place at spring training, so the picture captures a player before the regular season began. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan agency that supplied newspapers with pictures, made the glass negative in 1913, when the club was still known as the New York Highlanders and only later became the Yankees. Bain's photographs of ballplayers were often made for quick newspaper use, which makes this one a useful record of how teams and players were pictured in the early 1910s.
