Taken at Berlin, Maryland, a Potomac River town where Union troops crossed in late June 1863, this view carries the title *The leisurely pursuit*, a wry phrase for an army trailing an enemy it had not yet caught. That march north led directly to the fighting at Gettysburg a few days later. The photograph dates from 1863 and is labeled as a Brady picture, a reference to Mathew Brady's studio, which sent a large crew of photographers into the field during the war. This halftone print was made about 1911, when Civil War photographs were widely reproduced in books and magazines.
