Three men stand in a row before a canvas army tent, a pose that was common in Civil War studio and field photography. Photographers of the 1860s often traveled with the armies or set up portable darkrooms near camps, and tents like this one were the standard living quarters for enlisted soldiers and officers alike. Because exposures took several seconds, subjects had to hold still, which is why these portraits look so formal. Pictures like this one give a sense of daily camp life, which the battle scenes on the same board tend to leave out.
