Few newspaper posters from the 1890s make their point as plainly as this one, which presents the merger of two rival Chicago dailies as a wedding. The Chicago Times and the Chicago Herald combined on March 4, 1895, and the new Times-Herald used bride and herald imagery to announce the union. The color poster was drawn by W. W. Denslow, a Chicago illustrator who later gained lasting fame for his pictures in L. Frank Baum's *The Wonderful Wizard of Oz*. Worth noticing is how the advertisement borrows the ceremony of marriage to promote a newspaper in a crowded city market.
