From South Mountain, a high point in the Catskills, this view looks out at the mountains as the sun comes up over the valley. The engraving was made by S.V. Hunt from a painting by Harry Fenn, an artist known for his landscapes of the Hudson Valley and the Catskills. It appeared in *Picturesque America*, a two-volume survey of American scenery edited by poet William Cullen Bryant and published by D. Appleton & Co. in the early 1870s. Steel engraving at this scale was how many readers first saw such places before photography became common in books.
