The Catskill Mountain House is the subject here, a resort hotel perched on a rocky ledge of South Mountain, well above the Hudson Valley. Opened in 1824, it became one of the first major mountain resorts in America and drew wealthy travelers from New York City who came for the cool air and the wide view east across the valley. Painters of the Hudson River School, including Thomas Cole, helped make the surrounding Catskills famous, and the hotel became a fixture in their work. Its position on the cliff edge is what makes the building worth a close look.
