Printed as a page 11 illustration in an 1888 Boston edition of Washington Irving's *Rip Van Winkle*, this view of the Catskill Mountains sets the legend's landscape before the reader. Irving first published the story in 1819 as part of *The Sketch Book*, and he placed its hero in the Catskills above the Hudson River, so later illustrators often used such scenery to establish the tale's mood. The unverified catalog notes also mention children, kites and fishing, which hint at a lighter, pastoral touch in the mountain setting.
