Leisure, a hotel, and a garden gazebo are the three subjects this color chromolithograph names, and together they point to the Catskill resort trade of the 1880s. Wealthy visitors from New York and Philadelphia traveled up the Hudson Valley to stay in large mountain hotels, where they spent summers walking, riding, and sitting on verandas. The print carries a copyright notice for J. Hoover of Philadelphia, a reminder that chromolithography was a popular and affordable way to bring such scenes into middle-class parlors. Its bright colors and idealized setting reflect the era's taste for the Catskills as a summer retreat.
