Finley U.S. General Hospital was one of the many Army hospitals that spread across Washington, D.C., during the Civil War, when the wounded from battles in Virginia and Maryland arrived by rail and river steamer at a city that had to care for them in tents, converted buildings and purpose-built wards. This color lithograph was made by Charles Magnus, a New York publisher known for popular views of Union camps, hospitals and military life, and it was issued in 1864, when the capital's hospital system was at its largest. Prints like this one were sold to families and supporters of the army, so they show the orderly, reassuring face of a institution that was in fact overcrowded and grim.
