Freeport, a village on the south shore of Long Island in Nassau County, sat on Hempstead Bay in 1909, with its economy tied to the water and to the farms just inland. Fishing and clamming boats worked out of its canals and docks, and menhaden fish factories along the bay were a familiar part of the waterfront. The Long Island Rail Road's South Side line had carried passengers and freight through the village for decades, linking summer visitors and farm produce to New York City. Freeport had been incorporated as a village in 1892, and by 1909 its residents knew it as a fishing port and a gateway to the bay resorts, growing steadily as commuters and vacationers arrived.
