Tennis being played on the grounds of Hulett House, with the lake beyond, sets this view apart from the many other lakeside scenes in the collection. The camera looks north across the property toward Lake George in New York, capturing both the leisure of the resort and the open water that drew visitors. Around 1900, Lake George was a popular summer destination, and guests arrived by steamboat and rail to stay at hotels like this one. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many large-format views of American resorts and scenic places in these years, selling them to travelers and postcard buyers.
