At the Lake Hotel, on the northern shore of Yellowstone Lake, a bear is the subject here, which sets this view apart from the lodge and lake scenes that dominated the park's postcard trade. The hotel dated to the 1890s, and in the 1910s visitors often saw black bears and grizzlies near lodges and garbage dumps, where people fed them for entertainment. This print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, a step that suggests it was sold commercially as a view of park life. It is worth noticing how casually the animal appears beside the buildings, a reminder of how little separation there was between tourists and wildlife in the early park.
