Small detached buildings called longitude houses stood on the grounds of the Naval Observatory in Washington, where they were used to compare local time with the time kept at other observatories. Clock and telegraph signals exchanged between stations let astronomers work out the difference in longitude between places, a task essential to accurate charts and navigation. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative sometime between 1910 and 1926, recording a working scientific site in the nation's capital during that era.
