Few federal buildings in Washington have a longer working history than the Patent Office, whose Greek Revival facade is the subject of this view, dated to about 1916 to 1917. Construction began in 1836 under Robert Mills, and the building expanded over the following decades to hold the nation's patent records and models until the office moved out in 1932. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented the capital's streets and public buildings in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, and its date is inferred from neighboring negatives. Look for the stone columns and broad steps that give the building its temple-like presence.
