Few buildings in Washington held more of America's inventive work than the Patent Office, and this glass negative records it in the years between 1918 and 1928. Built in the Greek Revival style and largely finished in the 1860s, the building once displayed the working models that inventors submitted with their applications, and its halls were crowded with them for decades. The National Photo Company, which photographed the capital extensively in the early twentieth century, produced views like this one for visitors and publishers. Faint streaks on the glass reflect the natural deterioration of its original coating, a common trait of plates of this age.
