Interior views of federal money-handling offices from this period are uncommon, which makes this view of the Cash Room in the Office of the U.S. Treasurer worth a closer look. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio that photographed the city's government buildings and institutions in the early twentieth century, made the picture, and the 1914 date comes from a related negative. The Treasurer's office handled federal cash and the redemption of paper money, so the room would have been a busy working space. Faint streaks across the glass reflect natural deterioration of the original coating.
