Few federal buildings in Washington have a longer working history than the Patent Office, which this view shows in the years between the First World War and the late 1920s. Its Greek Revival building on F Street, begun in the 1830s, long housed the nation's collection of patent models. The National Photo Company made this picture on a glass negative, a format that recorded architectural detail well but was fragile, and the plate may show streaks and blemishes from the decay of its original coating. The title comes from information written on the negative sleeve and has not been independently verified.
